Mega EPA

Introduction

It is well known that too much fat imposes a health risk. There are 'good fats' and 'bad fats'. Research suggested that artificially produces trans-fatty acids carry significant health risks in any amount. It has been proposed that animal products, which contain saturated fats, should also be kept to a minimum.

Whilst the body is capable to synthesizing the majority of fatty acids it needs, there are two important fatty acids that the body requires but cannot make in sufficient amounts to meet its physiological needs. These fatty acids are deemed essential and must therefore be provided by the diet. Essential fatty acids are polyunsaturated and are grouped into two families, namely Omega 3 EFA's and Omega 6 EFA's.

What are EPA and DHA?

EPA and DHA are essential fatty acids which are derived from the Omega 3 series. Research has shown that these fatty acids are required for growth and development of all body cells including development of normal vision, hormone like products that affect the heart and immune system and the growth and development of the human brain, which in turn influences good mental health. Therefore a lack of these essential fatty acids affects all parts of body, namely bones, blood, organs, skin, hair and brain. The EFA's derived from omega 6 are also important for the health and development of body cells.

However, research has shown that as a nation, changing dietary patterns have led to a substantial rise in the intake of the EFA's derived from the Omega 6 fatty acids. These are consumed, mainly from the vegetable oils, and margarines, which dominate the shelves of the grocery stores. Therefore the dietary requirements for the EFA's derived from the Omega 3 series are not being met.

Surely I can take any fish oil supplement?

Each grade of fish oil is distinguished from the other by its purity and concentration of omega 3 fatty acids. When choosing a fish oil it is crucial that you choose one that is pure and free of contaminants and toxins. Currently there are three grades of fish available.

Cod liver oil has been described as the lowest quality fish oil and has the lowest concentration of EPA and DHA. It is also more likely to have the highest level of contaminants. Health-food Grade Fish Oils can contain up to 500mg of EPA/DHA. However, they are still likely to have a varying amount of contaminants.

Mega EPA /DHA are pharmaceutical grade fish oils. They undergo a specialist distillation process which not only give a fish oil that is rich in EPA/DHA, but one that is free of the pollutants and toxins that are a cause for concern.  Contrary to claims that these pharmaceutical grade fish oils are twice as expensive as other supplement, Mega EPA/DHA is on average three times less expensive than other well known brands of fish oil.

Just 2 capsulea per day gives you the entire Omega 3 EPA you need. Instead of taking four to five capsules of fish oil a day, you only have to take 2  capsules of Mega EPA/DHA. This means you can avoid the surplus fat that you would get from consuming ordinary fish oil.

The Mega EPA/DHA is a cold pressed "molecularly distilled" and highly purified omega-3 fatty acids the essential fats...EPA and DHA  . It's clean and free of contaminants. The ethyl esters are the active pure form of the fish oil. EthylEPA delivers EPA and DHA from cold-water fish in a 3:2 ratio (300 mg EPA: 200 mg DHA per capsule). The small amount of vitamin E added is to maintain freshness and stability.

Omega-3 fats play key roles in behavior and brain development in growing years and heart brain joint and vascular function and maintenance in mature years*. The importance of omega-3 fats in heart and vascular health as well as joint conditions is well documented yet most Americans underconsume these healthy fats*. Furthermore clinical trials using fish oil supplements have been shown to increase focus and attention in children with behavior concerns*.

Recent studies have demonstrated that ALA, EPA and DHA play a crucial role in the prevention of arteriosclerosis, heart and cardiovascular disease, depression and other typically Western diseases.

EPA and DHA are found in fish oil and converted in the body on the basis of ALA. They play a different part within the organism.

ALA and EPA are beneficial for the heart and arteries and in the event of infection:

      Suppresses AA for anti-inflammatory effect;

  • Lowers triglyceride level, increases HDL (beneficial cholesterol);
  • Prevents cardiac arrhythmia, stabilizes heart rhythm;
  • Has anti-thrombosis effect.
  • A dosage of fish oil supplying around 500mg daily of EPA is probably most appropriate for dyslexia, ADHD and related conditions.

Benefits of EFAs

Promotes Cardiovascular Health

Omega 3 remarkably reduces serum LDL "bad" cholesterol and triglycerides, while raising HDL "good" cholesterol. It also reduces the build-up of cholesterol-laden plaque in arteries. It promotes smoother, healthier and more elastic blood vessels and prevents platelet aggregation (blood clotting tendency),  which helps to lessen the risk of blood clots forming within a blood vessel or artery. These anti-thrombotic properties keep blood flowing freely and reduce the risk of a blood clot blocking blood flow, which can result in a fatal heart attack or stroke.

Relieves Aching Joints

Omega-3 anti-inflammatory actions help to reduce pain and swelling, and relieve discomfort in arthritic joints, hence allowing greater freedom of movement. Clinical studies reported decreased morning stiffness, fewer tender and swollen joints, less fatigue and less use of painkillers following regular intake of Omega-3.

Elevates Mood, Improves Concentration

DHA is an essential component of brain cell membranes and is crucial for brain health. By helping to build myelin sheaths around nerve fibres and ensuring fluidity of the synapses in the brain, DHA facilitates transmission of chemical messages between brain cells for efficient communication. Regular intake of Omega-3 not only boosts learning powers, memory and concentration, but also greatly enhances mood. Shortage of Omega-3 has been proven to cause brain degeneration and is considered a major factor in Alzheimer diseases (characterized by severe premature memory loss).

Omega-3 is the precursor for Series III prostaglandins that are responsible for reversing negative physiological responses to stress. Clinical studies show increased calmness in subjects following Omega-3 supplementation.

Alleviates Migraine Headaches

For those who suffer migraine attacks frequently or severely, prevention is key to the treatment plan. Clinical studies indicate that Omega-3 helps to regulate the production of ad?prostaglandins that promote pain and inflammation. It also improves blood flow to the brain by making the blood less sticky. This reduces the frequency, severity and duration of migraine headaches.

Encourages Healthy Youthful Skin

Omega-3 is vital for moist, healthy skin. It strengthens the delicate membrane that surrounds each cell to allow proper nourishment and waste removal. It encourages the production of stronger collagen and elastin fibres in the dermis, which helps to reduce wrinkles and fine lines and lift sagging skin. Common skin problems associated with Omega-3 deficiency include dry coarse skin, thick patches of skin, cracked heels, eczema, proriasis, acne, blackheads and whiteheads.

Vital For All Stages Of Life

Childhood

Improves immunity and lessens the incidence of asthma and other allergic conditions, such as rhinitis, eczema and other skin allergies. Improves brain function. Excellent for all children, especially those with behavioural and learning difficulties, often caused by improper transmission of messages in the brain.

Teens

Helps teenagers cope with the physical and mental effects of hormonal fluctuations, such as acne or pimple breakouts and feelings of aggression and depression. Improves brain function and concentration; helpful for the exam years. For girls, it helps lessen menstrual discomfort.

Adults

Helps busy adults handle work demands and protects them against stress. For those who use computers heavily, it helps protect the vision. It also helps reduce build-up of cholesterol. Helps regulate immune function - strengthen body defences and protects against autoimmune disorder.

The Senior Years

Omega-3s helps protect against the decline of physical and mental faculties. It helps alleviate or lower the risk of illnesses related to ageing, such as heart disease and poor circulation, arthritis and other inflammatory condition and Alzheimer disease.

Pregnant and Breastfeeding Mothers

Omega-3, particularly DHA, is crucial for the baby brain and vision development which peaks from the last three months of pregnancy until the baby reaches 2 years old. Pregnant or breastfeeding moms who ensure adequate intake of Omega-3 will greatly optimize their babies development and protect their own mental health (since the baby has to take DHA from the mother's brain for the growing baby if there is insufficient intake).

Dosage: 2 - 3 softgels daily after meal.
